CHAPTER NINE

ANA

I wake up groggy and unrested. The night had been a long battle with sleep, my mind stubbornly replaying every moment with Carter, every word he spoke. A part of me wanted to find my way to his room, lie beside him, and feel his warmth. But Carter made it clear that things between us would be strictly professional from now on. And I respect him enough not to cross boundaries, no matter how much it hurts. I’ve learned sometimes through all these months as we’ve been seeing each other: Carter is a man of his word, his willpower forged in steel.

I sit up in bed, pushing the tangled sheets aside. The room is bathed in the soft light of early morning, the world outside still and peaceful. I wish I could feel that peace, but my heart is filled with emotions—longing, regret, confusion.

The reality is I’m not just dealing with my own conflicting feelings. My mind is fixated on the man under the same roof yet so far away. There’s an element of fear, too. Fear of the unknown, fear of what lies ahead if we try and fail as a couple. There won’t be any more meetings in the middle of the night, and I will miss them. God knows, sometimes I needed those moments with Carter more than air.

But right now, I need to pull myself together.

As I step out of my room, the aroma of breakfast greets me. It’s barely seven in the morning. How is he already cooking?

“Do you ever sleep?” I ask playfully, coming into the kitchen, trying to keep the mood light despite the whirlwind of emotions churning inside me.

“Good morning to you, too.” He turns to me with a smile, a simple gesture that sends a wave of warmth through me.

I look at the table: eggs Benedict with asparagus and waffles with maple syrup. My favorite breakfast.

“You remember?” I ask, mumbling, which sounds more like a statement, unable to believe it. We ordered this breakfast just once—in the middle of the night, when I returned from the studio and was starving.

“Of course I remember. You ordered this in a hotel and paid twenty-six dollars. I wouldn’t forget that robbery,” he says with a hint of sarcasm. He tries to turn everything into a joke, but this gesture has already melted my heart.

I want to jump onto him and kiss him until we’re breathless. And then I want to do all kinds of dirty things with him.

“Don’t be coy,” I tell him playfully, wiping those thoughts away. Strictly business, I remind myself. “I know you own the leading security company in America. Billy probably pays you a ton of money.” I bite the waffle.

“Not that much—two hundred thousand a month. Kylie’s Mom, Kris, paid me more when she had a stalker.” Carter shrugs casually.

His words almost made me choke on my waffles. “What? You get two hundred thousand dollars for guarding me? I could track that stalker myself for that amount of money.
